1) Reflect on the process you went through to try and meet the brief. What did you learn about filming, organising media projects and the challenges involved?

I learnt that media projects are very time consuming in both planning and production. I also learnt that you have to re-shoot scenes a lot of times. It was very challenging to make the edit seem continuous as there are loads of small details that have to be perfect - and some are very obscure.

2) What were the strengths and weaknesses that you noticed in the screenings of other students’ editing videos?

I noticed that a few weaknesses were knowing where to cut the clips to make the edit seem continuous and there were quite a few errors with objects not being in the same position i.e. doors. there were also lots of times that the 180 degree rule was broken.

The strengths were that the brief was always interpreted creatively and over the shoulder shots were well done. The continuously edits were well done when someone was walking across a room and the camera changed perspective.

3) What have you learned from both this project and the lessons on editing that will help you when you start the actual coursework later this year?

I have learnt that it is good to always over plan and shoot scenes that may not end up in the final project. I have also learnt that it is important that i check every detail and frame of a shot to ensure that the transitions are smooth.

sound blog tasks

In the movie Pi, The director uses a voice over at the start of the clip to convey a story or perhaps the character that the camera is focusing on internal thoughts. This is non-diagetic sound as the characters in the scene are unable to hear it (perhaps barring the protagonist). There is a sound bridge of ticking through the scene of the bird flying and the dialogue. This would be non-diagetic during the scene with the bird, but may become diagetic during the dialogue. This could represent the protagonist's clouded point of view and maybe him being frustrated with the person talking to him.

Editing Task Blog Task

At the start of the clip, there is a cutaway edit to a different location in the same building which then cuts away again towards yet another location, also in the same building. This creates the effect that the people in the first cut are pursuing the antagonist in the second shot, and the third shot shows their progression throughout the building, tracking them on their journey. The quick succession of the cuts, shows to the audience that the two sets of characters are going to encounter each other, even before any other information is giving,  Allowing the scene to stand alone. This builds tension as the camera never focuses on what they’re holding or their location, proving that they are the most important things in the scene. When the camera focuses back onto the antagonist, the footage freezes and text flashes up on the screen with very important information about him, This allows the audience to learn about the character and focus their attention on him; hinting that he is an important character and that something will be happening to him. The editing then hastens between the room and the ventilation system that the protagonists are hiding in, which speeds up the pace of the scene, building tension and that a pivotal moment in the film’s storyline will be happening soon. When the two main characters fall through the ceiling, the scene is then put into slow motion which conveys the idea that a lot of vital parts of the storyline will be happening in a short span of time, so the editor needs to slow down the scene for the audience to be able to digest all the different aspects and creates a dramatic effect due to the violence of the scene. The whole of the action scene is edited in slow motion; after the two characters land on the ground, the scene speeds back up then straight cuts to them holding the man at gun point and speaking, this effectively shows their dominance and control over the situation.  The 180 degree rule is then deliberately broken, which is very uncommon in film, to confuse and disorientate the audience, the large amount of consecutive quick cuts will also add to this affect as the audiences perspective is constantly changing, making them very confused and unable to focus on a singular aspect of the scene. The editing then has a quick fade to white in time with the gunshot, proving that they have killed the man they were threatening and makes the audience anticipate what will happen next. The video is then changed to black and white and then slowed down once again which creates a severe dramatic effect and tells the audience that a pivotal point in the movie has just occurred and that they should be paying attention. This part then also cuts to the perspective of the victim, forcing the audience to focus on the perpetrators, this also places more emphasis on their power in the situation and allows them to look more intimidating. The quick cuts between each of the characters activities shows the audience both of their different roles, praying and making sure they’re all dead.  The last transition is a speedy wipe, which could represent that the characters have successfully completed their task; hidden it and have moved on to another assignment.

Cinematography

1)  In this opening sequence there is a large amount of swooping, birds eye view shoots to fully show the audience the size of the group to the audience, the transitions from each shot are very smooth to perhaps indicate the level of control the group has over the situation and to show their experience. The low camera angle used when a singular character kills a walker is effective in highlighting to the viewer their power and skill, this is most effective in the shot where the shields separate, revealing Judith (the little girl) as it tells the audience that even though she is a child, she is able to fight alongside adults and be a useful part of their army.

2) the camerawork gives clues about the characters by acknowledging key characters by having the camera pause on them or track them for a couple settings. The camera pans also tell the audience that they are on the coast of a country, via the opening shot of the walker in the ocean and the quick pan towards the group on the beach.

Image result for tv/film stills

in this shot the the low-camera angle emphasises how deep underground the characters are, but also shows that they have some sort of power over the situation as the low-angle makes them appear more powerful.

in this shot the low camera-angle connotes the idea that the two characters are responsible for the explosion in the background, the camera angle also makes sure the entire scene is filled with items so there is no blank space, making clear to the audience that this is a very important scene.

This scene is shot in a high angle which shows that the women are perhaps being intimidated by someone/something or are being belittled as the angle makes them look smaller. The camera is positioned straight on so we can see their faces and their expressions.

Sound Task Feedback

Mr Halsey: Opening half works very effectively as parallel sound. The switch to contrapuntal really works as it gets an audible reaction from the audience. I just wonder if you could have chosen a different clip where the protagonist looks scared rather than smiling? The editing touch with the volume at the end - Superb!  Was the opening half a little long?

Peer Feedback:  WWW:   So cute! met the brief really well.
                                          Very creative and funny.
Good choice of music and scenes.
                                          Good use of both sounds.
                                          Good Transitions.
                                          Heartwarming first video.
Ending has an element of comedic effect.
                                          Good editing.

EBI:                       A little longer for contrapuntal?
                                           Just a little long.
Last scene was sort of parallel.

Personal feedback: WWW: A good contrast between the different genres
                                             First half is distinctively parallel
Switched from the first video at a correct point (not cut off)

                                EBI: A bit long
Choose a different scene from the same show where the characters are                                                   scared/fighting

Top 3 Videos:  Manav - Humour
                        Hamzah- Had a story line
Cerys - good contrast between genres

I have learnt that sound is very important in media as it is able to completely change the message being conveyed and is able to influence the audiences emotions and feelings towards the characters.

Picture 1 :
High-key lighting, Sidelight. Creates mystery and gives dimension to the image due to the smoke. enables the viewer to guess what the film is about.

Time Lapse Feedback

WWW:          Use of Audio/voice over and music is really effective... works surprisingly well                                   over time lapse.

The Audience engagement is clear- absolute silence over the first minute or so.

Final effort is remarkable - real thought into costume and makeup and result is                                      pretty convincing.

                                Great framing.

                                great use of props

                               Great representation of Kenny.

                                Powerful and tense... Amazing!

EBI:
I wonder if final shots needed to be closer up rather than from further away as the                                 clear classroom setting at the end loses a little of the effect.

A lot of zooming in and out

The intro could have been cut out.

                               Don't drop the camera.

                              Blocking the shot.

Personal feedback:
WWW: I think that I used the audio in a creative and different way that conveyed                                a story.

EBI: stabilise the camera and have better lighting.

My mood board helped to develop my ideas as it helped me to visualise the character that I needed to recreate and get small details such as the dirt on the hat correct. It also gave me ideas for how I could convey the character's personailty.

I could improve my work in the future by fading the video and audio out, keeping the camera still, and having brighter lighting.

I have learnt that Mis-en-scene, especially costume is incredibly important in media as it gives the audience an insight into the character's background and personality. It can also provide insight into the upcoming scenes and perhaps some easter eggs of intertextuaility.

Mis-en-scene

Rose's costume is adorned in jewels which represents her class and financial situation which directly contrasts Jack's apparel of suspenders and a creased over shirt which is closely associated with lower class manual workers - people who rose would never usually associate with let alone kiss. The people standing in the background all have different types of costume, some dressed similar to Rose and some dressed similar to Jack perhaps indicating that societal stereotypes are not present where they are. The setting they are in is also very high class as the railings have gold ornaments on them and the surrounding wood is intricately carved, also presenting the idea that they are in a very expensive, lavish and high class setting - another thing that shows the contrast between Rose and Jack's life as this is a setting Rose would be used to but Jack would never see.

In the first scene the mis-en-scene includes a large number of trees, indicating that the setting is in a remote area. there is also a fence outlining the perimeter of the camp, leading to the interpretation that the inhabitants of the camp are hiding from something or someone. There are also a few run down houses and fruit plants that mean that the town is starting to thrive in a world that may not be so friendly.

However in the second clip the mis-en-scene is very domestic and homely, perhaps representing the only character in the clip's personality. The woman polishes expensive looking cutlery, indicating her high financial status. Her financial status could also be  represented by her costume, the pearl necklace and the apron, the apron signifying that she doesn't need to work,.

Time Lapse mood board.

Quick to kill anyone but when it comes to his family he struggles - hypocritical
Still saved Lee in the first episode even if he is rude to him.
