sound blog tasks

In the movie Pi, The director uses a voice over at the start of the clip to convey a story or perhaps the character that the camera is focusing on internal thoughts. This is non-diagetic sound as the characters in the scene are unable to hear it (perhaps barring the protagonist). There is a sound bridge of ticking through the scene of the bird flying and the dialogue. This would be non-diagetic during the scene with the bird, but may become diagetic during the dialogue. This could represent the protagonist's clouded point of view and maybe him being frustrated with the person talking to him.

Editing Task Blog Task

At the start of the clip, there is a cutaway edit to a different location in the same building which then cuts away again towards yet another location, also in the same building. This creates the effect that the people in the first cut are pursuing the antagonist in the second shot, and the third shot shows their progression throughout the building, tracking them on their journey. The quick succession of the cuts, shows to the audience that the two sets of characters are going to encounter each other, even before any other information is giving,  Allowing the scene to stand alone. This builds tension as the camera never focuses on what they’re holding or their location, proving that they are the most important things in the scene. When the camera focuses back onto the antagonist, the footage freezes and text flashes up on the screen with very important information about him, This allows the audience to learn about the character and focus their attention on him; hinting that he is an important character and that something will be happening to him. The editing then hastens between the room and the ventilation system that the protagonists are hiding in, which speeds up the pace of the scene, building tension and that a pivotal moment in the film’s storyline will be happening soon. When the two main characters fall through the ceiling, the scene is then put into slow motion which conveys the idea that a lot of vital parts of the storyline will be happening in a short span of time, so the editor needs to slow down the scene for the audience to be able to digest all the different aspects and creates a dramatic effect due to the violence of the scene. The whole of the action scene is edited in slow motion; after the two characters land on the ground, the scene speeds back up then straight cuts to them holding the man at gun point and speaking, this effectively shows their dominance and control over the situation.  The 180 degree rule is then deliberately broken, which is very uncommon in film, to confuse and disorientate the audience, the large amount of consecutive quick cuts will also add to this affect as the audiences perspective is constantly changing, making them very confused and unable to focus on a singular aspect of the scene. The editing then has a quick fade to white in time with the gunshot, proving that they have killed the man they were threatening and makes the audience anticipate what will happen next. The video is then changed to black and white and then slowed down once again which creates a severe dramatic effect and tells the audience that a pivotal point in the movie has just occurred and that they should be paying attention. This part then also cuts to the perspective of the victim, forcing the audience to focus on the perpetrators, this also places more emphasis on their power in the situation and allows them to look more intimidating. The quick cuts between each of the characters activities shows the audience both of their different roles, praying and making sure they’re all dead.  The last transition is a speedy wipe, which could represent that the characters have successfully completed their task; hidden it and have moved on to another assignment.
